UNIX and Linux system administration is no easy task - especially when you are dealing with a cluster of servers or even a multitude of virtual servers. However, it is made easier through automation practices such as scripts, event monitoring and log analyzing.
GinormousTools' CommandCenter helps system administrators by consolidating scripts and keeps a list of managed servers and hosts - all from the comfort of your Mac. You can even launch an SSH session on a target host or server in a Terminal window from within CommandCenter!
Scripts can be any scriptable language such as bash, csh, Perl, Python, etc. They are stored on your Mac and can be executed or "pushed" to a target server or host with a few clicks. After the script runs, the script is then removed from the target server. Talk about tidy, you will never need to wonder where you stored a useful script again!
You can even click on a hostname in the list and launch a "quick run" box to type single line commands to execute on the target host or server.
Script output logs are generated after each script and command run. These script output logs are also timestamped with information about the user and target host. The captured logs can even be edited while you capture more logs from script runs making it easy to fine tune the output (for reports). These logs can then be saved or printed - a useful snapshot tool whenever you need it.
CommandCenter's database is an XML file that can be easily modified by hand (or vi/emacs) whenever required. It also makes it easier to share it with colleagues or even to build script databases with your favourite XML editor. Having it in XML format means it is future proof and backwards compatible.
You can even share your script collection by saving a copy without your host/server list. This makes it easier to delegate tasks to junior system administrators. It even makes it easier for junior system administrators to view the scripts given to them - lowering the learning curve for system administrators new to the job.
CommandCenter was built by an experienced UNIX/Linux system administrator for system administrators. Ideas are always welcome.
Oh yes. Be nice and buy a copy of my software if you like it. Minor and build version upgrades are always available for free to registered users and major versions will appear every year for a small upgrade fee.
